Missing thirty

My friend Jody died of cancer just about four years ago, June 7, 2004, at the age of 26. Today is his birthday. Had he lived, he would have been 30 today. The real irony is that years ago, when he was in college, he was very depressed, and often talked about ending his own life before turning 30. Then he got a great job, great friends, and his life really hit its stride. That was when the cancer struck. Then, when it was real and staring him in the face, he fought hard. He spent most of a year battling it into remission, had the best summer of his life... but it came back that autumn and took him away at the end of the spring.

He would have been 30 today. What I wouldn't give to have him here for that.

I'm sorry he's not here. I know it hurts.
