The look of love

I think it's Richard Dawkins who has theorized that our pets are the inadvertent beneficiaries of a broken or hyperactive gene in human beings... one that would ordinary say, in most species, "you will be driven to nurture and defend small creatures that look sufficiently like you until their neotenous characteristics abate", but in us now directs "you will be driven to nurture and defend small creatures that look even vaguely like you; and in the event they reciprocate your affection, will do so indefinitely"...

Ho-lee $#!+, that's a lot of money. My divorce cost only slightly more than that.

It's awful that you would have had to spend that kind of money to end the most fundamental of relationships. I think all things being equal, both you and I would rather spend that money, if we HAD to spend that money, trying to rescue beings we love.
