Yes, we fugly bananas...

The Royal Ontario Museum's in the midst of going after the crown for Canada's ugliest public building, currently held by Mississauga's city hall. They're building a new wing on that's supposed to resemble a crystal when it's finished, but which looks to me, and most people I've talked to, like something that fell down. Here's what it looks like as of a couple of weeks ago...

Coming to a subway stop near you: fugly!!!

Supposedly, when it's all finished, it's going to look like this. I'm reminded of the scene in The Blob when the blob escapes from the movie theatre and oozes around the side of the building, partially engulfing it. Apparently, among other things, the museum's dinosaur bones are going to be displayed there. No doubt the dinosaurs will be powerfully reminded of their final moments as the asteroid smashed into the Earth.

When I was a kid, I was terrified of the blob. I mean seriously. I had nightmares about it. Crazy. I'm well versed in Blobology.

Sight unseen, I bought the new version of The Blob on DVD a couple of years ago. There's a scene where The Kid Who You Know Will Make It To The End in fact is consumed, screaming, eyes dissolving while his girlfriend pulls his arm off...

Haven't watched it a second time yet.

My partner once bought me the original on VHS (pre-DVD days) as a joke. I don't think he realized the phobia was serious. I never watched it and eventually got rid of it.

If, flipping channels, I happen upon the move, I recognize it in a milisecond and actually feel frightened. Amazing how childhood fears imprint themselves!

It's a surprisingly primal feeling, isn't it? But the there's just something so deep-seated in our revulsion to the idea of being painfully, searingly consumed by an unthinking mass of protoplasm, reduced from a thinking being of a species capable of space flight and changing the course of rivers to something that simply lives to live. I find it an even more disturbing movie than Jaws.
